Emergency Veterinary Pet Care
It can be hard to tell whether or not your pet is experiencing a health emergency. You may be aware of an acute injury that requires emergency care, such as a broken bone after a fall, but other signs of a need for emergency care are more subtle. In addition to behavioral changes in your pet, look out for these signs as indicators that you need to seek emergency pet care.
- Change in gum color. Be familiar with your dog or cat's normal gum color so that you're aware when a change has occurred. Different colors can mean different types of emergencies. For example, cherry red gums can indicate heat stroke or carbon monoxide poisoning, while pale gums can indicate internal bleeding, poisoning, or hypothermia.
- Rapid or labored breathing. If your pets are breathing in a way that is unusual for them, it's a sign that something is wrong. Extremely fast or extremely slow breathing are both signs of health emergencies in dogs and cats.
- Seizures. As a pet owner, it's scary to watch your dog or cat go through a seizure. Sometimes, the causes of seizures cannot be found. Other times, they can be due to injury, extremely high fever, or other health issues. If you dog or cat has a seizure, seek emergency care right away.
- Paralysis or difficulty standing. If your pet is struggling to move, it can be a sign of a life threatening emergency. Don't hesitate to seek medical attention.
